On special feasts, the entire parish community is brought together when these cultures are highlighted in the celebration of the Eucharist with different languages, truly celebrating “the Tables of Faith, Hope, and Love.”

Supporting our Parishes

Sundays at Our Lady of Hope Church on North Broad Street are an amazing mix of multiculturalism. The 8:30 AM Mass features an African-American gospel choir. At 10:30 there’s a Mass in Spanish. At 12:30 the Filipino faithful gather for Mass in their native Tagolog. And on special feasts, the entire parish community is brought together when these cultures are highlighted in the celebration of the Eucharist with different languages, truly celebrating “the Tables of Faith, Hope, and Love.”

The pastor at Our Lady of Hope, Father Efren V. Esmilia, or simply Father Efren as everyone calls him, is committed to shaping this diverse and sprawling parish into one Eucharistic community. Father Efren and his Director of Parish Evangelization and Social Justice, Sr. Gertrude Borres, R.A., are dedicated to promoting inclusivity, embracing immigrants and creating a parish life that allows the world to see how the mission is lived.

One unique way Father Efren reaches out to the community is at the annual Broad Street Run. The race begins virtually at the front door of the church, and in recent years, Father Efren has celebrated a pre-race Mass and welcomed runners to attend. Each year it has become more and more popular among the runners and their family and friends.

Our Lady of Hope, one of 16 mission parishes in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, runs on lay volunteers from all different backgrounds and ethnic groups. Most evenings the parish hall is busy with meetings and classes such as ESL (English as a Second Language) and even SSL (Spanish as a Second Language). Our Lady of Hope and other mission parishes throughout the Archdiocese are able to continue their work through the generosity of sister parishes and also through your generosity to the Catholic Charities Appeal. Please help us continue the vital work of this and other mission parish communities.
